Well people it’s officially summer! Ahhh longer days, fun nights, and great memories! If you are like me, then you’ll probably be heading to the beach or a pool party soon. For the last few weeks I’ve been on a man-hunt for the perfect swimsuit, and let me say it has been e x h a u s t i n g. I never knew finding a swimsuit could be so hard. My criteria for the perfect swimsuit consisted of two things: 1. It had to flatter my body, and 2. I have to look and feel like a billion bucks. After a lot of trial and errors, I’ve finally found 3 types of swimsuit styles that will not only compliment me, but every girl’s body type. Check out the options below!
#1. “The High-Waisted Bikini” This is the perfect swimsuit for the girl that wants to wear a bikini, but would like to control how much of her tummy she reveals. I recommend buying a bikini bottom that has some ruching, to create the appearance of a flat and toned tummy. Also the vintage style, will give you the sex appeal of a pin-up girl.
#2. “The Sexy One-Piece” This may be my favorite swimsuit style of them all. It flatters all of a normal girl’s “problem” areas, but guarantees sex appeal. Opt for a style that has cut-outs, a low front or back.
#3. “The Fun One-Piece” This swimsuit is for the fashionistas that want to look cute on the beach, but still have total coverage. To liven up this classic go-to, look for styles that have bold prints or graphic designs.
I hope with my help you’ll find your perfect swimsuit!

As you all may know today is Father’s Day! On this special day, we all celebrate the wonderful men in our lives who are dear old dads. When I reflect on my dad, a lot of divine moments come to mind. Over the years my dad has taught me so much. He was the person that first taught me how use a steak knife, the person that taught me to stand for what I believe in, but most importantly my dad taught me to embrace myself to the fullest and never apologize for being who I am. In honor of Father’s Day I’ve decided to share with you all my fondest moment with my dad.
When I was five years year old, I had my first encounter with bullying. I was a little girl with a cocoa complexion, and beautiful kinky curly hair. This was way before the natural hair craze, so too many I just looked…different. After being teased for a large portion of that school day, I can remember feeling so defeated. I couldn’t help but to think that something was wrong with me. Later on that day my dad picked me up from school. My eyes were so puffy, he could tell I had been crying. He asked, “What’s wrong princess?” I began to tell him how I had been teased about my skin color and my hair. He stopped the car, turned around, and told me, “First off you are a beautiful and intelligent little girl, and don’t ever allow anyone to tell you differently. Secondly, you are not different, you are an individual, and just better, those little girls are jealous because they can’t be you. And thirdly, nothing is wrong with being different. Being different means you can never be boring, and nothing’s worse than being boring.” After that conversation, I felt so empowered, I was so proud to embrace who Deveney was, and still is today.
I’m not sure if my dad even remembers that day, but it is definitely a moment I will never forget. To this day, my dad still encourages me to be proud of being an individual. I am so appreciative of his advice. I pray I can continue to share priceless moments with my dad.
What’s your favorite memory or moment with your father? I would love to hear it!

If you are like me then you LOVE a good bag! Bags have the ability to make or break an outfit. Most ladies buy one essential bag, and usually wear it with E V E R Y ensemble. However, it is very important to wear a bag that not only compliments what you are wearing, but what you are doing as well. Think about it, you wouldn’t use your evening clutch for a festival? I’ve decided to list the five types of bags every fashionista should own. Check it out below!
#1. “The Carry All” If you are a busy diva like myself, then you NEED a carry all tote bag. This bag should be large enough to fit all of your essentials, but still functional so that you can carry it around all day. It should be a neutral color to match everything in your wardrobe.
#2. “The Chic Shoulder Bag” This is what I like to call “the Sunday Brunch purse,” it has a luxe look, and screams fabulous! This bag is usually a fun/bold color, and has a good structure. It should be smaller than your everyday tote, but large enough for all of your necessities.
#3. “The Fun Crossbody” This is the traveling fashionista’s best-friend. The last thing you ever want on a vacation is to bring unwanted attention to yourself. Instead of lugging around a massive tote, opt for a cute hands free bag, that holds all of your essentials. This bag will be perfect for sightseeing, and shopping.
#4. “The Sexy Clutch” This bag screams show me a good time! It’s perfect for a night out on the town, and date night. It should be large enough to fit all of your minimal essentials (phone, money, fave lipstick, etc.), but small enough that it won’t get in your way as you dance the night away.
#5. “The Special Occasion Bag” The name says it all. This purse should only be taken out of your closet for the A-List things, such as an upscale wedding, grand ball, or walking the red carpet. It should have fine detailing like pearls or dainty gemstones.
Be sure to pick up these 5 fab bags on your next shopping day!

In case you don’t know, June is nationally recognized for being “Black Music Month.” African-Americans have contributed to the world of music tremendously. From the likes of Sammy Davis to Billie Holiday to Whitney Houston, African-Americans have left a profound impact on music, that will timelessly inspire future musicians to come.
Ever since I can remember I’ve always been a HUGE fan of Hip Hop music. No I’m not talking about rap music. I mean pure Hip Hop, and yes there is a difference. Real Hip Hop makes you feel something, has a thought provoking topic, mixed with dope lyricism. Much like myself hip hop is unapologetically expressive.
Hip Hop forces me to take off my rose-colored glasses and view the world from everyone’s point of view. It reminds me of the progress we’ve made as a people and the change that still needs to happen. It pushes me to strive harder for my dreams. And when I just need to vibe out and relax my mind, hip hop can do that for me too.
In honor of “Black Music Month,” I’ve decided to put together a playlist of some of my favorite hip hop songs, check it out below!
1.“Heard ‘Em Say” x Kanye West ft. Adam Levine
2.“Sing About Me” x Kendrick Lamar
3.“On and On” x Joey Bada$$ ft. Maverick Sabre and Dyemond Lewis
4.“Electric Relaxation” x A Tribe Called Quest
5.“Forbidden Fruit” x J. Cole ft. Kendrick Lamar
6.“Testify” x Common
7.“Break You Off” x The Roots ft. Musiq
8.“Over My Dead Body” x Drake
9.“Memories” x Big Sean
10.“The Pessimist” x Wale ft. J. Cole
I truly hope all of you Hip Hop lovers out there enjoy my playlist.

So it’s 12/13/14, and I’m loving the fact that today’s date are numbers that falls into a sequence pattern. I feel like today will be a good day. Honestly, I’ve been having a lot of wonderful days lately. Seriously! Through all of the bullish that life throws my way, I’ve been feeling so happy lately. I guess you can say I’ve really been enjoying my life at the moment. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I FINALLY realized you can’t control what happens in life.
I now understand the saying “When you make plans for your life, God laughs.” As I have mentioned previously, I’ve pretty much had my adult life planned since I was about 12 years old. I was going to an HBCU, then off to grad school, where I would meet my handsome husband, become a renown Clinical Psychologist, and then have 3 beautiful kids. But suddenly, my junior year at Dillard, I realized there was a flaw in my seemingly flawless plan. It was B O R I N G, and the same story of many others before me. The last thing I ever want to be is boring, or normal. So from that day forward I decided I was going to just embrace the journey of the life. The good and the bad.
So far, so good. For the first time in my life I truly don’t know how my story will end. I’m just enjoying how my story is evolving. I no longer have a 5 year detailed plan. Do I still have goals? Of course! However, I’m no longer putting pressure on myself to meet society’s deadlines. I have no desire to get married by 25 or have kids by 28, and that’s okay. Who knew that learning yourself would be so much fun?!
Moral of this very random story you ask? The only thing in life that should ever go in a sequence pattern are numbers, well..unless you want to be boring and normal.

One great thing about living in a city like New Orleans you never know who’ll you meet. Usually I meet wonderful kindred spirits, who I have the best conversations with, and unknowingly give me some of the best advice a person could ever receive. However every once in a while I encounter some just plain mean, unhappy people.
It’s always the worst when you’re having a fabulous day and the cosmic demons, as I call them, find their way into your life. You know, those people who come around and combat every positive statement you say with something demeaning or an annoying remark. Well, I’m here to tell you do not allow people’s unhappiness to rub off on you. Don’t let their bad energy feed on your spirit. As the old saying goes misery definitely loves company. Unhappy people have wounded souls, and they just want someone to feel as broken as they do. Just remain being your happy-go-lucky self, PRAY and carry on.
And for those of you who have wounded souls, or feel eternally broken. Yes. Life may suck right now, but trust me it will get better. Remember, you will NEVER find happiness by bringing misery to other people. Happiness begins with a positive attitude. So put a smile on your face and carry on as well.
